1998 Uruguayan Tournament This year´s championship saw a change in the format from past tournaments. This season, the championship was divided in two different tournaments, the Apertura and Clausura, with the following rules; if the same team wins both tournaments, that team is the Uruguayan champion, but if different teams win the separate tournaments, a final match will decide who is the champ. This is not the case for First Division, because for the ninth consecutive time, Carrasco Polo Umbro has won, undefeated, the Uruguayan Tournament. This is undoubtedly a great achievement for the good team of Carrasco Polo, that blends youth with experience to make a lethal combination, which has proven to be unbeatable for the rest of the uruguayan clubs. As for Old Boys, the First Division team finished in the third position of the overall table, having a somewhat irregular season. The captain for this season was Juán Andrés Péres (Toco), who showed a true leader personality to lead the team. We had once more several players included in the National Team, such as Alfonso Cardoso, Juan Carlos Bado and Carlos Rodríguez, who played excellent rugby defending the Uruguayan team. The Reserve team had a great season, playing the finals of the Apertura and the Clausura against the classic rival, the Old Christians Club. We lost the Apertura final in overtime by a penalty kick after a very tough match, which left us very motivated for a second match. Luckily, at the time of the Clausura final it was our turn to win another tough match against the same rival. This gave us the chance to play for the Uruguayan championship, for the first time in more than ten years in the Reserve division! Unfortunately, we lost that game playing against a better team than ours, so it will be for another time. However, the Club achieved the Clausura title, so we are very optimistic for next season. As for the final standings, we do not have them available, but as soon as we do we´ll post them up here. All material published in this page responsability of Duncan Espiga |
